Civic Tech & Digital Volunteering

Civic tech is technology in the service of citizens: tools that strengthen participation, improve public services and carry social projects.

What digital volunteering does

Volunteers build websites for non-profit organisations, support schools with their technology, or develop applications for social services. The engagement is independent of place and fits flexibly into everyday life; those who take part learn themselves and grow on real tasks. The community gains skills it could not otherwise afford.

What civic tech changes

Three things, concretely. First, decision-making: participation platforms, crowdsourcing and interactive tools give citizens a direct voice in decisions that concern their surroundings. Second, public services: technology can simplify processes and increase transparency, and with it trust in institutions. Third, social innovation: from open data and machine methods come answers to questions that had no procedure before.

Where the limit lies

Volunteering replaces no statutory duty. Where a service is needed permanently, it needs a permanent responsibility and a budget; civic tech can show that something works, but it must not become the excuse for not running it properly. Organisations and municipalities that take the engagement seriously therefore give it both: recognition, and a path into regular operation.
